Autumn weddings can have such lovely magical light, and that was certainly the case a few weeks ago when I joined Lucy and Anthony at one of my favourite venues, Askham Hall. Their wedding crowd were fantastic, the perfect mix of chilled and excitable. Oh and take note future couples - ideally please start your special day with the groomsmen in swimming trunks, yeah? ;)
Anthony and his family are Jewish and it's a Jewish tradition that the bride and groom do not see each other for about a week before the wedding day. Just before the ceremony the groom meets the bride to make sure it's the right woman (apparently the whole thing stemmed from a story many many years ago where a man married the wrong woman because he didn't look under her veil before they said their vows...). I love capturing the ‘first look’ and this couple’s was even more special, with Anthony waiting by the fire in the drawing room and Lucy floating elegantly (even in Converse!) down the amazing staircase.
The weather was kind – although it was late in the season the bravest were out in the gardens enjoying the prettiest of canapes in the fading sun. Others were inside dancing to the amazing tunes by drinks musician Dan Morgan - who was formerly Anthony’s music teacher! There was plenty of laughter and smiles and the speeches were made even more entertaining with a fun Jagermeister game.
But the best was still yet to come…..THE DANCING…!
The lights were set up…cue a romantic first dance…then BOOM we are into the Jewish dancing and, oh my days, I’ve never seen anything like it! The energy was off the scale – chairs aloft, ties swinging, feet stamping, dresses twirling – it was out of this world!
The thing I loved about these two was that they had SO much fun, but at the bat of an eyelid they could momentarily take life seriously if need me. That is one wholly admirable quality right there. Congratulations you lovely couple!
